Step #5: Postage
There are three categories of mail: First class mail, Standard mail, and Periodicals.
Postage rates vary greatly depending on the concentration of the mailing, the weight of the piece, and the rate category.
1) First class mail has the highest postage and the fastest delivery.
96% of all first class mail is delivered anywhere in the US within three days. Local mail is generally delivered in one or two days. The price is higher but for time sensitive mailings First Class may be the best option. In most cases, the more concentrated a mailing is, the lower the postage rate. There is also a price difference between letter size mail and flat sized mail.
2) Standard mail, (formally known as bulk mail) postage rates may be as low as 18.3 cents per piece or as high as 84.2 cents per piece.
Most mailings will go out between 21 and 30 cents per piece. Flat sized mailings will go out between 29.8 and 68.9 cents per piece. Non-profit rates are about half of Standard rates but the mailer must be documented to be non-profit by the USPS.
3) A periodical publication or periodical is one published at a stated frequency with the intent to continue publication indefinitely.
Periodicals have sequenced issue numbers. The primary purpose of the periodical is to provide information and the content consists of original and/or reprinted articles on various topics, listings, photographs, illustrations, graphs, a combination of advertising and non-advertising matter, comic strips, legal notices, editorial material, cartoons, or other subject matter. The advantage of periodicals is price and distribution time. They do require significant work and the requirements are sometimes difficult to meet.
