Step #1: Data
The most important part of any mailing is the data. It does not matter how good your offer is, if your advertising is not getting to people who are interested in your product you will not make sales. Before you go out and buy a new mailing list, keep this in mind:
“It is easier to keep an old client than it is to generate a new client.”
Your first target should be your own clientele. Create a mailing list of the people who have done business with you before. Remember that other businesses are going to try to steal them away from you. (Isn't that what you want to do to them?) If you do not have a data base of your current clients, we can create one for you for less than 25 cents per name depending on the sophistication of your data base and how much information is required for each name. More than once we have been given a shoe box full of cards and scraps and turned it into a clean and useful data base.
If you do not have an existing client list or if a new target market is desired, data may also be purchased from a list broker. You determine the demographics of your potential clients and place an appropriate order for data. Demographics for residential data may include home ownership, age, sex, income, and the number and age of the children. Business demographics may include number of employees, SIC (standard industrial code), years in business, or income.
Knowing your clientele will allow you to determine whom you want to target for your mailing campaign. The data is often sent by email but there are some list sources that send data on magnetic tape or disks. Data purchased from a list broker will generally cost between .03 and .25 per name. Data is most often purchased for unlimited use but there may be use limitations on some very sophisticated lists.
David Moe is an excellent list broker who is located locally here in the Sacramento area. His phone number is (916) 339-3100 or (800) 367-5478.
